The Boat

We fish aboard a 30' Penn Yan 295 Prowler.  We work very hard to keep her clean and in tip-top mechanical condition, and we're proud to share her with you.  She has an extra-wide 11' beam, two 260hp V-8 engines, a fully enclosed head and a full galley.  At nearly 12,000 lbs, she'll cut through the roughest stuff Lake Ontario can dish out.  She has a hard-top so that you can get out of the sun and elements and there's plenty of room down below to stow your things.  She's equipped with all of the latest electronics: Furuno Radar, a HUGE 10.4" Humminbird 1157C color Fish Finder with XM Satellite Weather,  Humminbird 955C color GPS/Chartplotter, Raymarine Autopilot, VHF ship to shore radio, cell phone, and a Depth Raider speed & temperature probe.

As far as the fishing equipment goes, we've got you completely covered there too: Daiwa Heartland downrigger and dipsy diver rods, Daiwa Sealine and Accudepth Plus linecounter reels, NEW high-speed Cannon Mag 20 DT/TS downriggers, Northern King Lures, Sigg's Rigs Flys, Dreamweaver Lures and Spin Doctors, Traxstech rod holders, and much, much more.  In short, we have all the equipment you'll need for a safe, enjoyable outing...no matter the species we're pursuing.  Of course, the boat is USCG inspected and fully insured.

Billy V II

I get asked all the time about the name of the boat...."Where did the name Billy V come from?"  Most people mistakenly assume that my last name starts with V, and that I named the boat after myself.  I'm here to tell you that's not the case.  Back before we had any kids, my wife and I began working with a financial planner.  The planner began asking us questions about where we saw our lives in 5, 10, 20 years, and we mentioned that we'd like to have kids someday.  I'm the 4th in a long line of William Ruth's, and he began joking with us that if we ever had a son that we'd carry on the tradition and name him the 5th.  That quickly morphed into a long-running joke about our yet-to-be-born son, Billy V.  I swore up and down that I wouldn't name my child William the 5th.  But as soon as he was born, I realized that I couldn't break the tradition, and we did indeed name him the 5th.  When it came time to name our last boat, Billy V seemed to be a perfect fit.  All of my fishing buddies call me Billy, even though I've  gone by Bill in every other part of my life.  I go by Billy V on the fishing forums.  We named the business Billy V Sportfishing.  When it came time to name this new boat, Billy V II was the only thing that made sense to me.  Now I just need to figure out how to incorporate my second son's name into the business!  Maybe a second boat???  Time will tell........
